Positions and Advocacy

Positions on issues...never on candidates...are taken at the national, state and local levels of the League of Women Voters. Advocacy on issues is based on both the Principles of the League of Women Voters and on positions that are the result of extensive study and an exhaustive consensus process with League membership.

The League of Women Voters of Washington establishes a set of Legislative Priorities to pursue during the legislative session.

Local Study

Local programs of study are determined by the membership. After extensive research members come together to discuss the findings and determine areas of agreement in establishing a position on the study topic. Take a look at issues on which the local League has taken a position.

Criteria for selection of a local program of study

  • The item should relate to a problem which can be met through government action;
  • The topic should be timely;
  • The item should be subject to and worthy of local League action, thus giving members experience in responsible citizen action;
  • The study and potential resulting action should be compatible with other LWV local, state and national programs and must be feasible with respect to available time, experience and funds.
