"Marysville ballot forum gets testy", Everett Herald, 8/28/02, by staff writer B. Kelly
MARYSVILLE -- Dave Aldrich said he just wanted to "shake things up around here" by advocating that Marysville get rid of its elected mayor and have a hired manager run things at City Hall. Mission accomplished. A forum hosted by the League of Women Voters of Snohomish County on Proposition 1, the upcoming ballot measure that would change Marysville's government from a council-mayor to a council-manager form, plummeted into personal attacks after Aldrich explained why he was promoting the switch...
"We mustn't give up on clean campaigns", Everett Herald, 9/18/02, Editorial
Everybody says they want clean political campaigns, but when it comes down to it, how many of us really mean that? Better yet, how many of us would even offer similar definitions of appropriate campaign conduct?
Already the nastiness is heating up in certain races throughout Snohomish County. It's only going to get worse. Or is it?
The League of Women Voters of Snohomish County is playing the optimist in a game dominated by pessimists and rule-breakers. The league, in partnership with the Institute on Global Ethics, is pursuing the Project on Campaign Conduct as a means of cleaning up campaigns so people can once again stomach the election process and get clear answers...
"No on I-776: Keep local control", Everett Herald, 10/20/02, Guest Editorial by Bob Drewel
As voters sit down to make a decision on Initiative 776, we should ask ourselves, "If we are tired of traffic congestion in Snohomish County, why on Earth would we pass a statewide initiative that repeals existing local funding for Snohomish County roads and transit?" I-776 waves the well-worn banner of $30 car tabs, but the real effect is taking away locally approved funding for roads and transit in one of the most congested parts of our state. Further, it undermines local control by allowing a statewide vote to overturn the decisions of Snohomish County residents...
"Yes on R-51: Invest in our future", Everett Herald, 10/20/02, Guest Editorial by Phil Bussey
Washington has an enormous transportation problem and voters deserve a common-sense approach to address it. Referendum 51 is that solution. It will help fix unsafe roads and bridges, provide traffic relief, improve public transportation and ensure accountability so taxpayers know how their transportation dollars are spent. On Nov. 5, Washington voters should vote yes on R-51 because it makes sense...
"We can't build our way out of gridlock" , Everett Herald, 9/4/02, letter from Katherine Johnson of Lake Stevens
I was disappointed to see that the Washington State League of Women Voters has endorsed Referendum 51. It is true that R-51 would provide a small amount of funding for HOV lanes, ferries, rail and public transportation. Unfortunately, it would also provide a large amount of money to finance enormous environmental degradation without improving traffic.
"Korean-language voters guide aids citizen empowerment", Seattle Times, 10/20/02, by staff reporters J. Sullivan and C. Clarridge
Cheryl Lee has had countless conversations with her father and other first-generation Korean immigrants who've wanted to vote but felt confused by the language on the ballot. Lee and more than 30 volunteers from the newly formed Korean American Voters Alliance (KAVA) have spent the past several weeks creating Korean-language voters guides for King, Snohomish and Pierce counties. KAVA members spent yesterday afternoon at a Des Moines church getting 2,500 pamphlets—with information about state initiatives, judicial candidates, state legislative candidates and congressional candidates—ready for mailing. Lee, chairwoman of KAVA's Transitional Steering Committee, buzzed around the long tables chatting with the volunteers. She quietly spoke with her father, Yu Shin Lee, as he pasted addresses on the thick guides. "It's very sad," Lee said, translating for her 65-year-old father, who has wanted to exercise his right to vote but was reluctant to because of his limited English. "He said it's sad to the point it hurts." ...
