LWVWA Action Priorities for the 2003 Legislative Session
We advocate and support:
- Children
- Support funding programs that promote safe and healthy development of children
- Expand developmentally appropriate childcare, with availability of flexibility hours care, and infant/toddler care
- Restore state subsidy funding which allows low-income parents additional access to quality child care
- Support legislation that keeps children safe in the environment and in the home
- Education
- A review of the revenues required to continue implementation and provide full funding of education reform
- Energy
- Set standards for utilities to diversify their energy resources with renewable resources
- Support energy bill assistance for low income households
- Global Climate Change
- Clean, renewable energy sources
- Mass transit alternatives
- State agencies' authority to mitigate greenhouse gases
- Establishment of a state greenhouse gas registry
- Government
- A fully funded Public Disclosure Commission with sufficient enforcement power
- Protecting the right of all citizens to vote, encouraging all citizens to vote
- Growth and Sustainability
- Full and fair implementation of GMA, SMA and SEPA
- Protection of our marine and fresh water resources
- Emphasis on sustainability in community including equitable and efficient safe drinking water supplies and economic development legislation
- Gun Control
- Support legislation to close the gun show loophole and reduce illegal access to firearms
- Health Care
- Develop and implement a prescription drug purchasing pool
- Reproductive Rights
- Action to protect the constitutional right to privacy of the individual to make reproductive choices
- Taxes
- A balanced, fair, flexible and economically sound tax system
- Transportation
- A balanced transportation system including appropriate infrastructure
- Welfare
- Assure that all people's basic needs are met
- Provide adequate help with quality child care and transportation
- Provide education and training essential for family-wage employment
