Mission

The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political organization, encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in government and influences public policy through education and advocacy.

OUR VISION

Membership

The League of Women Voters of Snohomish County is incorporated and organized under the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, Section 501(c)(4), as a charitable, educational, non profit, civic group. The Education Fund at the state (LWVWA) and national (LWVUS) levels are organized under the Internal Revenue Code, Section 501(c)(3).

Membership Details

Membership is open to any person who subscribes to the purposes, policies, and principles of the League of Women Voters. There are three types of membership:
  1. Voting members: United States citizens at least 18 years old.
  2. Associate members: Persons who are not yet of voting age, and persons who are not citizens.
  3. Members-At-Large: Persons who reside outside of the area served by a local League.

A one year membership begins on July 1 and ends June 30. Individual dues are $50.00; each additional member in a household is eligible to pay a reduced amount equal to the per-member payments that the local League must forward to the state and national League organizations. Membership dues are not tax deductible. However, contributions to the League of Women Voters of Washington Education Fund (in the name of LWVSC) are fully tax deductible and encouraged!

Of the dues, all except approximately $11.00 goes to LWVUS and LWVWA as "per member payments" (PMP's). The remaining $11.00, supplemented by other donations from members, helps to supports our local league. Local league expenses (per member) include mailing the monthly newsletter, the Voter; conducting an annual meeting and unit meetings; and general administration and operating costs (such as meeting rooms, supplies, phone, insurance, and the League PO box).

Membership in the League of Women Voters of Snohomish County (LWVSC) entitles one to full membership and mailings from your local league (which is LWVSC), the League of Women Voters of Washington State (LWVWA), and the League of Women Voters of the United States (LWVUS). Like the local league, the state and national leagues prepare communications, conduct member conventions (in alternating years), lobby their respective legislatures, conduct educational programs, and maintain offices with administrative staff. In addition, the national league is a granting organization. As a member of the local league, you are eligible to act as a delegate to these conventions and councils (the local league board must elect you as delegate); and of course you may involve yourself in any and all of the educational and advocacy efforts of the state and national organizations. League members learn the ropes of government and politics like nobody else!

LWVSC encourages all of its members to participate in member recruitment. League unit meetings are open to the public. Prospective members will receive three free mailings of the Voter newsletter upon request.
