    The Background Story
From its inception, KSER 90.7 FM has hosted League programs and benefitted from the time contributed by League volunteers. In fact, LWVSC's first KSER production, an interview with the county assessor on property tax reassessment, aired during KSER's initial week of operations in February 1991. Since then, listeners have enjoyed programs on a variety of topics that spin off from the League's annual program focus. Early examples, each with a local focus on Snohomish County's needs, included:
    • Homelessness and affordable housing
    • Voter registration process
    • Tax reform and welfare

Benita Helseth and Norma Bruns were involved in the League's first KSER production, and Norma continues to lead the way today. She sees radio as a way to add to the effectiveness of the League's work: "It's a terrific opportunity to get the word out." Norma credits League member Benita Helseth with the idea of getting KSER and LWVSC together in the first place, and reminds us that League volunteer participation in creating new programming for KSER continues to be strong.

In 1996, the League began to solicit, record, and air statements from political candidates running for office. Candidates would either come in to the station, which is located on Wetmore Avenue at Everett Avenue in Everett, or else would call in to make their statements. Candidate statements are typically three to five minutes in length. Minor party candidates particularly appreciate the opportunity to air a statement. The response from all candidates to the League's approach has been very good, however.
