Statement on February 24, 2022“No one asks the poor if they want war.” These words appear in Viet Thanh Nguyen’s 2016 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Sympathizer. They jumped off the page when I first read the book in 2017, and I have remembered them ever since. The only people who want war are those who have never seen war. You are forever changed when your own eyes have seen what war does, when you’ve seen homes and buildings turned to rubble, seen children and teenagers with thousand-mile stares, seen gaping wounds, missing limbs, and scars that never heal. I despise war, and the greed and hatred that feed it. The UN was created so there’d never be another war. So was the League of Nations. Treaties are signed and ignored. Alliances rise and fall. We are a very small part of democracy in a very small corner of this planet we call home. This is a difficult day. We cannot know what the future will bring, but we must continue every day to build and reinforce the democratic institutions of this nation we call home. We must continue to work every day for the ideals upon which this nation was founded. We must do what we can to create a more perfect union, fixing that which we can, working with others where needed, to spread life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness to everyone. --Angela Gyurko, President, LWVJC Jefferson County Ballot Box Locations:Quinault Nation (Queets)
