Hear From Legislators and Guest Speakers
We will be joined by legislative leadership, democracy bill champions, and diverse advocates who will provide an insider’s perspective on how decisions are made in Olympia.
Learn About Critical Issues and Bills
You will learn about critical democracy issues in Washington State and bills our organizations will be supporting in the 2020 session to:
-
expand voting opportunities and empower underrepresented communities
-
reduce the influence of special interest money
-
modernize the redistricting process to ensure transparency and representation
-
promote more representative election systems and districts
-
protect election security and integrity
-
strengthen government ethics
Be Trained by Professional Lobbyists
You will receive training about how to effectively advocate in the legislature, speak comfortably with lawmakers, and testify in committee. No need to be an expert in policy. Just bring your passion for democracy and a readiness to learn how to take action!
Meet With Your State Legislators
As part of Democracy Lobby Day, you will meet with your state legislators to advocate for democracy-related bills. The meetings will be set up for you and guidance provided on speaking comfortably with your representatives. Your personal participation has a direct impact!
Network With Others From Your Area
You will connect with like-minded advocates from across the state who share your passion for our democracy. You will have time to meet and strategize with others from your legislative district who will be attending meetings with you.
DEMOCRACY ROCKS!
Once again we will have bring brightly colored, hand-painted “Democracy Rocks” to give to your legislators as a paperweight and a reminder of who they represent. Last year, volunteers painted almost 200 rocks, which were a huge hit with elected officials.
Make it personal by creating your own Democracy Rocks paperweight for your legislator; see our instructions here.
LUNCH PROVIDED—PLEASE CHIP IN
To help cover the costs of the room and refreshments, we invite those who can to chip in $25 per person, or more to help others attend. However, payment is not mandatory—we do not want financial concerns to prevent anyone from participating.
After you register, you will receive additional information regarding the day's schedule, carpooling opportunities, parking, and other details. The organizers will be making appointments with your individual legislators—you will not need to do that.
LODGING
League members and supporters have generously offered to host advocates the night before the event. When you register you will be asked if you want overnight accommodations and we will follow up with you.
