On Tuesday, February 26 at 5:30 PM, the League of Women Voters Yakima County is sponsoring a presentation by Sarah Augustine on the current court case concerning the ICWA.

The Indian Child Welfare Act of 1978 (ICWA) is a Federal law that governs jurisdiction over the removal of Native American children from their families. The ICWA was struck down by a federal court in Texas in October 2018. The decision is heading to appeal in the 5th district, and if the decision is upheld it will most likely go on to the Supreme Court. Briefly, the ICWA was created to strengthen the rights of Native American families, and stipulates that where children are removed from their families, they must be placed with relatives, tribal members, or members of another tribe.

The event is open to the public and will be held at Wesley United Methodist Church at 14 N 48th Avenue (corner of 48th and Chestnut) in Yakima. This topic is an important issue in our Native American community and the organizations that work for and with this community. The League believes it is also an important issue for all Yakima county residents, and is pleased to present this opportunity for greater understanding and awareness.

Sarah Augustine, Executive Director of The Dispute Resolution Center, is a recognized local activist and educator in the indigenous and minority communities, and is known internationally as a founder of the Suriname Indigenous Health Fund.
