Advocacy efforts for the League of Women Voters of Washington in the area of Agriculture will focus on issues as they relate to agriculture viability, climate impacts, pollution and safe food access.

The 2026 Legislative Session

For the 2026 Legislative Session, revenue concerns may affect agriculture legislation needed to support conservation efforts, funding for the Sustainable Farm and Fields Program, and studies for pesticide alternatives.  Environmental impacts on rural communities impacted by Contained Animal Feeding Operations (factory farms) pollution will require legislative action.   We support funding for conservation, climate smart agriculture and environmentally sound practices that promote and protect public health.

 2026 Agriculture Legislation

HB 2238 
Concerning statewide food security.
This bill would provide for the development of a strategy for statewide food security in order to end hunger, reduce diet-related health disparities, and increase agricultural viability and supply chain resilience.

SB 5474/HB 1588 Expanding opportunities for organic, regenerative, climate-smart, and sustainable producers.

SB 5055 Promoting agritourism in Washington.

HB 2279 Evaluating the use of PFAS chemicals in agriculture.

SB 5971 Establishing a green fertilizer incentive program to support the production and adoption of low carbon nitrogen fertilizer in Washington state.

SB 5117 Agriculture Impacts/Protecting Agriculture. 
This bill would make government responsible for determining the impact of legislation on agriculture.


How To Be Involved

  •  If you are interested in a particular bill, use the links above to go to the webpage for that bill. These pages include staff summaries and reports including who testified PRO versus CON on the bill. There is also information about how to access videos of hearings that have been held.

  •  Read and take action through the LWVWA Legislative Action Newsletter, distributed each Sunday during the legislative session.
  •  Comment on bills in two different ways where it is indicated below that a bill is still in rules—let your legislator know that you would like the bill to come to a floor vote and that you would like them to vote for it.
      • Click on the bill # below and then on the right side of the bill page, click on the green box: “Send a comment on this bill to your legislators.” Follow prompts to send your own message.

      • Call the Legislative Hotline 1-800-562-6000 to leave a message for your legislator. Get more info on the Hotline.

  • Please communicate directly with your Senators and Representative to both to thank them for moving legislation along (if they did do that) OR o encourage them to bring other bills to a floor vote.  

  • Express your opinion on legislation to the LWVWA issue chairs—we take your perspectives under consideration as we determine our support for legislation and prepare testimony. Please direct questions or comments to Phyllis Farrell, Agriculture Issue Chair.
